Who We Are

Picture 1.jpg

The CAPB is a non-profit organization comprising members with a shared interest in plant biotechnology. This includes topics such as genomics/ transcriptomics, plant metabolism, climate change-resilience, biotic stress resistance, food or forage quality, crop productivity, synthetic biology, plant bioproducts, and molecular breeding platforms and methods, to name a few. In addition, we also strive to stay up to date with other aspects of plant biotechnology, such as changing crop regulatory policies and public outreach. Our members are wide-ranging, consisting of undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research associates, academic researchers, government scientists, and industry, for example.

Our Goals

  • Promote interaction among plant biotechnology researchers in Canada

  • Advocate for plant biotechnology research

  • Bridge the gap between academia, government, and industry

  • Serve as a contact point for plant biotechnology-related information in Canada

  • Liaise with the International Association for Plant Biotechnology

Our History

The International Association for Plant Biotechnology (IAPB) Canada was initially part of the IAPB, which was formed in 1970-1971 as the International Association for Plant Tissue Culture (IAPTC) when plant in vitro regeneration was a major research area in the plant sciences. In 1998, the IAPTC Congress was held in Israel, and the association was renamed to include Biotechnology (IAPTC&B) to reflect the expansion of this research area. During the 11th IAPTC&B Congress, which was held in Beijing, China in 2006, the association was renamed once again to its current name (IAPB). In 2015, IAPB Canada was converted to the Canadian Association for Plant Biotechnology (CAPB).

The CAPB is a non-profit organization comprising members with a shared interest in plant biotechnology. We also strive to stay up to date with other aspects of plant biotechnology, such as changing crop regulatory policies and public outreach.
